The Govt. of India, Ministry of human resource development has set up community polytechnic schemes in 1979 throughout the country in 35 selected polytechnics, because AICTE recommended that selected polytechnic should act as focal points to promote community/rural development on scientific lines through technology transfer. The major attention under this scheme is the technology transfer, which is provided to the unemployed people of village and urban areas, so that youth may be capable to stand at their own feet regarding the self employment.

Community polytechnic is not a separate institution. It is wing attached to the regular polytechnics under direct central assistance scheme by MHRD, Govt. of India. Community polytechnic Ambikapur is functioning since 1992-93. This scheme was closed in 2007 and reopen in the year 2010 with new name COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH POLYTECHNIC and continues till now.
