In the 1980s, state of Madhya Pradesh had several engineering, medical and polytechnic colleges. To expand technical education, the state government decided to establish new engineering and polytechnic colleges. On May 25, 1982, the Govt. Polytechnic Ambikapur was established as 22nd polytechnic to promote technical education in tribal areas. Initially, the college had started with the Civil Engineering department. Surguja’s abundant coal and bauxite resources led to the introduction of a Mining and Mine Surveying Engineering department in 1988-89.
Currently, the college runs with 06 branches, each with an intake of 42 students. The college has over 700 students pursuing diplomas, supported by 32 highly qualified lecturers and 82 supporting staff members. Today, the college has its own 24-acre campus with a 1-lakh-square-foot building, comprising over 100 rooms, laboratories, workshops, a library, classrooms, a conference hall, sports ground, canteen, and gardens. The library houses approximately 35,000 books across various streams. The college provides a 102-bed boys’ hostel and has permission to establish a 52-bed girls’ hostel. There are also 31 quarters for staff accommodation.
